Knack Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Knack is a free, peer-to-peer tutoring platform that is overseen by Academic Success and Advising and connects currently enrolled Georgia Tech undergraduate students with Georgia Tech tutors who have excelled in their courses. All Knack tutors are current Georgia Tech undergraduate students who have earned an A in the class they support and are in good academic standing. Through Knack, students can book 1-to-1 tutoring sessions, which can be scheduled either virtually or in-person for added flexibility.
Here are a few common questions about Knack:
What if I cannot find my class or an appointment that suits my schedule?
If you encounter any challenges while using Knack or are unable to make an appointment, please reach out to our Knack partners directly at support@joinknack.com. If you have trouble finding support that fits your needs or schedule, email tutoring@gatech.edu, and we will work to identify tutoring or other forms of academic support for you.
Is Knack the only tutoring service available at Georgia Tech?
No! Academic Success and Advising offers other academic support services:
- PLUS (Peer-Led Undergraduate Study) – Collaborative group study sessions.
- Drop-In Tutoring – Immediate course support with tutors and TAs, no appointment needed.
- Tutoring Center in Clough 273 – Tutors available for high-demand courses Monday – Thursday from 9 AM – 1 PM
What courses are supported by Knack tutoring, and how do students sign up?
Knack offers tutoring for a variety of undergraduate courses at Georgia Tech, currently supporting over 150 courses, with a focus on 1000 and 2000-level STEM courses. The catalog of supported courses, available in the accordion field above, sometimes changes, so be sure to check back for additional options.
Who can be a Knack tutor?
Any current Georgia Tech undergraduate student who has earned an A in the course at Georgia Tech and is in good academic standing is eligible to apply to be a Knack tutor. However, J1/F1 visa holders are not permitted to tutor on the Knack platform, as it violates the terms of their visa. Students on J1/F1 visas are encouraged to visit Student Employment Opportunities to explore alternative employment within Academic Success and Advising.
How do Knack tutors receive training?
Tutors go through a training that is rooted in College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) best practices and guidelines for peer tutoring. Tutors also can participate in additional training initiatives to secure badges on their profile, which indicate their level of expertise in different areas.
Can Georgia Tech students who are already tutors apply to be Knack tutors? Are international students eligible?
Yes! Current Georgia Tech undergraduate students who work as PLUS leaders, drop-in tutors, or learning assistants can also apply to be Knack tutors if they meet the requirements. However, J1/F1 visa holders cannot tutor on Knack due to visa restrictions as Knack hires students as independent contractors. J1/F1 visa holders who accept employment at Knack may jeopardize their visas and their ability to continue study in the US.
What if I haven’t been matched with a tutor yet?
If you haven’t been matched with a tutor on Knack, keep checking back as availability updates frequently. You can also explore other Georgia Tech tutoring options, such as PLUS sessions and Drop-In Tutoring, for additional support. Please contact ASA tutoring staff with any questions or concerns at tutoring@gatech.edu.
Where do Knack tutoring sessions occur?
Knack tutoring sessions may occur online through Knack’s platform. Appointments may also be scheduled in-person on campus at spaces designated on the Knack app. Students may not schedule in-person appointments at off-campus locations.
Are there any limits to Knack sessions I can schedule?
While students may have only two appointments per week per course, they may pursue tutoring for multiple courses throughout the semester.
What do I do if I did not have a good experience with my tutor or have other concerns about Knack?
Please reach out to Knack directly at support@joinknack.com with any concerns you have about your tutoring experience. If you continue to experience problems, please let us know by emailing tutoring@gatech.edu.
